I’ve been sloshing through rainy day after rainy day. Blah! And yet, I had the most wonderful rainy day experience at the farmers market last weekend because I tasted my first spring strawberry. Oh my gosh, I wish I could give you a “sniff” of the sweetness of the strawberries I found. The first bite into a juicy strawberry is so wonderful I don’t even know how to express it!
When we were kids we would pick huge buckets of strawberries, and my mom made strawberry shortcake: good ol’ fashioned biscuit cake. Mom layered the cake with whipped cream and loads of sliced strawberries and then more on top. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Our strawberry patch was always thick with a weed that had prickles on it. Weeding out the patch was considered one of the worst jobs assigned, but the reward of that cake made it all worthwhile!

Not only do I love the sweetness of the strawberry, but I also appreciate its healthy support of my body. Strawberries are 91% water and are only 7.7% carbohydrates. Shaped like a heart, they are heart healthy. Rich in antioxidants, they are a good source of Vitamin C and manganese, plus contain good amounts of folate (vitamin B9) and potassium.
What’s not to love about the taste of in-season strawberries? I love strawberries in my salads, in a fruit tart, and sliced up in my bowl of cereal! Go out and “pick” some strawberries today, and enjoy the first taste of spring. Remember dipping strawberries in powdered sugar? Yum!
